Nigerian Legal Framework for Telemedicine and Other Health Care Technology: An Ultimate Solution For Reaching the SDG 3

The world is in an advanced technological era, and the impact of technology is pervasive across all facets of human activity. Health care has advanced with telemedicine, wearables, and Artificial Intelligence. Nigeria is significantly behind in achieving SDG 3. Technology, especially telemedicine, offers a solution. There is currently no specific legal framework guiding the practice of telemedicine in Nigeria. While there are existing laws such as the Constitution, National Health Act, and Criminal and Penal Codes, which contain provisions vaguely relating to the practice of telemedicine in Nigeria, none of them is tailored solely to telemedicine and none of the laws is adequate to meet the peculiar demands of telemedicine. This study concludes that to achieve SDG 3 by 2030, Nigeria must, through the Law Reform Commission, harmonise all telemedicine laws and, through the Legislature, create a comprehensive legal framework for optimal use and practice of telemedicine and other healthcare technology.
