Development of a Condition Monitoring System on an In-Situ Pipeline Conveying Water

This study aims to provide a complete condition monitoring system for in-situ water pipelines. The system includes a rain sensor, an ATMEGA328P microprocessor, copper cables, LED lights, a buzzer for user notifications, and an S.D. card for data storage. The major goal is to detect possible faults, including leaks, corrosion, and structural weaknesses, in real-time, allowing for preventative maintenance and lowering the chance of catastrophic failures. The rain sensor detects the presence of water outside the pipeline while the microcontroller interprets the data and activates LED lights and a buzzer to warn the user. Copper wires act as sensor elements for aberrant electrical conductivity, signalling the possibility of corrosion or pipe deterioration—the S.D. card stores data for subsequent analysis. The project proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the designed technology by providing valuable insights into pipeline conditions for prompt maintenance. The results show that the resistance increases as the leak gets closer to the station outlet (i.e., resistance is 1023 at 140cm). Incorporated in real-life scenarios, this will help locate the exact position of the leak on the in-situ pipeline. Integrating new sensors, refining software and hardware components, and introducing wireless communication capabilities for real-time remote monitoring are all possibilities for advancement. The project helps to build dependable condition monitoring systems, assuring the long-term operation of water distribution networks.
