Development of Verification Environment for I2C Serial Communication Protocol using UVM

The I2C protocol, originally developed by Philips Semiconductors, plays a crucial role in enabling communication between devices, particularly between faster and slower components, using a serial data bus. This protocol reduces connection costs and minimizes the number of IC pins required, making it essential in contemporary electronic designs. By allowing devices to communicate over a shared serial interface without data loss, this challenge is addressed through the use of hardware verification languages such as System Verilog. These languages enable the development of thorough verification environments that include various components tailored for simulation, checking, and gathering functional coverage metrics. In a proposed project focusing on implementing the I2C protocol using System Verilog, the emphasis is on verifying functional coverage. This verification process involves comparing System Verilog with the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM), particularly concerning timing parameters. While System Verilog enables flexible setups for verification environments without strict adherence to a specific methodology, UVM stands out as the preferred industry choice due to its reusability, efficiency, and structured approach to verification.
