Interpretation and Applicability Analysis of Guides for Phase Shifting Transformer

Phase shifting transformer (PST) serves as a pivotal power flow control device, significantly contributing to the stability of power grids. In China, research on PSTs commenced relatively late and has seen limited practical engineering applications, resulting in a scarcity of technical guidelines specifically tailored for Chinese PSTs. Currently, many countries, including China, primarily reference international standards such as IEC/IEEE 60076-57-1202 and IEC 62032 for the design and engineering applications of PSTs. This paper provides an overview of the development of technical guides for PSTs, with particular emphasis on IEC/IEEE 60076-57-1202 and IEC 62032 while integrating general power transformer guidelines GB/T 18494.3-2023, GB/T 10228–2023, and GB 20052–2024 applicable in China. Furthermore, this study proposes an engineering design guide for PST implementation within the Chinese context and analyzes corresponding selection criteria based on practical engineering scenarios. Finally, a practical example is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed engineering design guide for PSTs.
