Speed Control of Separately Excited DC Motor Using Fuzzy Logic Controller

This paper presents the speed control of a separately excited DC motor (SEDC). Motor speed control is focused by controlling the field current. This method can be applied to achieve energy savings in motors with optimization techniques. The parameter values and mathematical model of motors are important for the design of the controller. The process of determining motor parameters is intricate. However, the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) does not require the parameter and mathematical model of motors for the design of the control system. Therefore, this paper utilizes the FLC to control the field current for the speed control of a SEDC motor. The experimental results of the motor speed control using the FLC are compared with those obtained using a PI controller. The comparison results show that the SEDC motor speed control with the FLC can control the motor speed closer to the reference speed than the PI controller in both the transient and steady states.
