Design of an Adjustable-Performance Internal Permanent Magnet Motor for DC Inverter Compressors Used in Air-Conditioning Systems

This study proposes a permanent magnet synchronous motor for use in inverter refrigerant compressors, primarily applied in portable air conditioning units. Customers expect various performance requirements, such as energy efficiency, noise, and vibration. However, manufacturers cannot practically invest in multiple sets of molds to meet those demands; typically, one set of molds is used for motors with the same output specifications. Hence, to address the customer requirements, this study proposes an adjustable performance internal permanent magnet synchronous motor. Portable air conditioning units are focused on addressing noise and vibration suppression. Therefore, this study explores the harmonics of the back electromotive force and cogging torque. Two different motor shapes were designed; by adjusting the proportion of these motor constructions, the motor performance could be adjusted according to the development requirements for satisfying different application scenarios. This approach effectively reduced noise and vibration, significantly improving the performance of portable air conditioning units.
