Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in Sustainable Development Goals

Digitalizing, developing digital applications and Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer a transformative means for contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study reviews the applications of AI for sustainability across different domains and it has been observed that some of the areas include energy management through smart grids and optimization algorithms, precision farming, use-cases like disease detention on crops in agriculture, water conservation-water auditing in but not limited to smart irrigation systems. Waste management, climate change mitigation through enhanced carbon cycle monitoring and the use of global artificial intelligence to improve transportation efficiency are examples. By monitoring and maintaining habitat information, AI can help endangered animals effectively: gather data on environment necessary to keep track of wild life population. It even facilitates smarter cities in sustainable urban planning with better resource utilization. While there are huge opportunities here, AI also comes with some challenges that persist around data privacy and ethics (and let's not forget the on-going concerns about the digital divide too). It underlines the value AI, one of the digitalization tools that is often seen as a driver for sustainable development yet which must be used judiciously and inclusively to promote equal benefits. Overall, AI is been used on widespread specialization with sustainability and this overview has only scratched the surface of each area; nevertheless it provides a condensed introduction to these powerful technologies for readers interested in investigating further.
