Principles and approaches for successful energy transition

The countries with electricity generation based on fossil fuels have questionable future energy independence and security of end-users supply. Hence, it is inevitable to find technical and technological solutions that will enable sustainable future development. A holistic approach, proposed in this paper, could enhance the synergy of the solutions and various options for power systems’ long-term decarbonization and operational optimization in real time. That approach comprehends, among others, the application of circular economy principles, improvement of energy efficiency and the system’s flexibility, diversification of primary fuels and types of energy sources, multifunctional utilization of the primary fuels and efficient energy conversion and storage, utilizing the electricity surpluses. It is necessary to establish gradually such a production mix, which would be based and relied on different, environmentally friendly energy sources and on new technologies, which will be not only feasible and sustainable in the long term, but also technically, financially and economically optimal, as well as social ly acceptable. The principles that will lead to an increase in energy efficiency, the establishment of a circular economy in the power sector and the reduction of its negative impacts on the environment, as well as on the social aspect, should be respected and applied.
