Eco-friendly IoT switchgear – reducing uncertainty while accelerating SF6-free transition

In many industries, the practice of involving end-users early in the product development cycle has proven highly effective. However, this approach is only now gaining traction in the traditionally conservative power industry, where utilities have historically prioritized reliability and risk aversion. This paper explores the principles, benefits, and implementation of "Alpha Projects"—a methodology aimed at accelerating innovation by working directly with users to test new technologies in their early development stages. This strategy allows both manufacturers and utilities to reap significant benefits through close collaboration and real-time feedback. It also means that both parties are willing to take some calculated risk since Alpha products are not fully vetted and suitable for 30-year life in harsh conditions. As part of this initiative, an SF6-free gas switchgear has been deployed in the field with several sensors to monitor its health status for 12 months.
