Influence of extreme temperatures on the lifespan of power transformers and cables in Benin’s electricity distribution network by 2035-2050: innovative approach for sustainable improvement of resilience

The article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the aging of transformers and the weathering profile of the cables of the electricity distribution network in Benin in the context of climate change. Probabilistic modelling of transformer life i s performed associated with the use of a phenomenological model based on thermoelectric stresses. The results obtained indicate that in long-term standby mode with a temperature of the hot spot (the transformer consumes on average 82 days/ year of its life, and the average life of the electric cables is between 18 and 28 years, aggravating the current vulnerability of the Beninese electricity grid with a rate likely to deteriorate from 36% to 50% by 2035 perspectives 2050. To improve resilience, an innov ative approach based on real-time hot spot temperature monitoring of power transformers and cables, from smart sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and or SCADA on the perimeter of the departure of Fidjrossè in Cotonou in Benin is studied. It strengthens the resilience of the distribution network and facilitates its restoration in real time in case of avalanches.
