Certified insulation systems for improving resilience of transformers and distribution grids

This paper emphasizes the importance of insulation systems for grid resiliency and the certification processes that ensure their safety and reliability. Global standardization organizations and certification bodies have established evaluation methods to verify performance of insulation systems, which is becoming more important as newer insulation materials become more prevalent. Using a certified insulation system can support a more resilient grid by lessening the resources required for new equipment evaluation and enable faster deployment of transformers in times such as disaster. This paper also gives an example of a certified insulation system using advanced materials for liquid filled transformers and a compatibility evaluation – both supporting a more resilient grid.
