Evaluation of Textile Electrodes for Bioelectric Signal Acquisition Using a Simulated Muscle Skin Model

As textile electrodes become increasingly integral to Smart Clothing for continuous health monitoring, reliable evaluation methods are essential. This study introduces an in-vitro testing protocol using the TITV Y-tube skin model to assess dry textile electrodes. By simulating physiological skin conditions with a semipermeable membrane and an electrolyte medium, the model closely replicates human skin impedance and bioelectric signal transmission. Our methodology combines impedance measurements and bio-signal simulations to provide detailed assessments of signal stability, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and overall electrode performance under varying pressures and moisture levels. This standardized testing approach allows for reproducible and efficient data collection without relying on human or animal subjects. The findings reveal significant correlations between electrode material properties and bioelectric signal quality, highlighting the TITV model's effectiveness in advancing the development of textile electrodes for Smart Clothing and wearable health applications. This work contributes a novel, standardized platform for electrode characterization, supporting ongoing research in electrochemical evaluation and the advancement of wearable medical devices.
