Breaking Barriers in E-Textile Production: Industry-Driven Solutions for Scaling

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of wearable devices, specifically e-textiles. However, these advancements often remain confined to academic settings, typically within early Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This detachment from end-user requirements and the practicalities of scaling up presents a substantial challenge. To better understand these issues and identify opportunities to reduce barriers, we conducted interviews with over 30 subject matter experts in wearable and e-textile production. Our study revealed common challenges, including communication barriers between disciplines and insufficient knowledge around intellectual property. Practical measures identified include the establishment of an expert advisory panel for technical due diligence, and targeted intellectual property support for small businesses. By highlighting these pathways, our study aims to guide the commercialization journey for the next generation of e-textiles.
