A Novel Modular Multi-level Converter Based on Interleaved Boost Converter Without Voltage Balancing For EV Application

Implementing high-voltage battery packs requires a more complicated Battery Management System (BMS). For this reason, the use of step-up DC-DC converters before a two-level inverter has been proposed in many articles. However, these reported topologies have drawbacks such as low efficiency and high voltage considerations. To mitigate these problems, this research offers a new topology based on the combination of Interleaved Boost Converter (IBC) and Modular Multi-level Converter (MMC). The proposed method benefits from features of both converters which are lower current ripple and simple control strategy due to eliminating the need for capacitor voltage balancing methods for each submodule in MMC with the fixed output voltage of IBC. The proposed Interleaved Boost Modular Multi-level Converter (IBMMC) advantages have been validated with relevant simulations using MATLAB Simulink.
