MobiGuard: An IoT-Based Monitoring System for Persons with Walking Disability at Home Integrating Computer Vision, Mobile Application, and Schedule Reminder

Individuals with walking disabilities face heightened risks, particularly during sudden disasters like fires, as they are more likely to be left behind or abandoned. Reports of fire incidents involving such individuals highlight the need for better safety measures. Caregivers, often juggling multiple responsibilities, struggle to provide constant supervision, making it challenging to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for those under their care. Traditional care methods, including physical aids and manual monitoring, offer limited real-time support, especially during emergencies. This capstone project, titled MobiGuard, addresses these problems by developing an IoT-based monitoring system that integrates computer vision, a mobile application, and a schedule reminder to enhance care and safety for persons with walking disabilities. MobiGuard provides a solution through three main components: computer vision-based person tracking through the YOLOv8, allowing caregivers to monitor the individual remotely while tracking their movements and detecting potential fire hazards. A mobile application for assistive communication between the individual and the caregiver, ensuring assistance requests and emergency alerts are prioritized. Lastly, a task scheduling system with real-time reminders and audio alerts to help caregivers manage medication and daily activities efficiently. To ensure that the MobiGuard system met its specified requirements, the researchers conducted an evaluation based on the ISO 25010:2011 software quality model. The system was assessed in four key areas: Functional Suitability, Performance Efficiency, Reliability, and Usability. The evaluation revealed a mean score of 3.63 for Functional Suitability, rated as “Very High.” Performance Efficiency scored an average of 3.64, also classified as “Very High.” Reliability received a mean score of 3.52, similarly rated as “Very High,” and Usability was evaluated with a score of 3.63, likewise classified as “Very High.” These consistently high ratings across all categories indicate that the MobiGuard system performs both effectively and efficiently.
