Through-Glass-Via Interposer for High-Speed Electrical Interfacing in a 400 Gbps Optical Engine for On-Board Optics and Pluggable Optical Transceivers

We propose a 400 Gbps optical engine based on through-glass-via (TGV) interposers. By integrating TGV interposer, radio frequency loss is minimized in high-frequency region and optical engine replacement is facilitated through localized laser soldering process. The measured electrical-to-optical frequency response characteristics of the optical engine include an S21−3 dB bandwidth (BW) of 51.8 GHz, a transmitter dispersion eye closure quaternary of less than 1.6 dB, and successful real-time operation at 4 × 106 Gbps meeting the KP4-FEC threshold at a receiver sensitivity of −8.3 dBm. This demonstrates the potential applicability to on-board optics and high-BW pluggable optical transceivers.
