A Tension- Velocity Control Approach for Roll-to-Roll Systems with Slippage Effect

The roll-to-roll system is widely used in manufacturing processes such as making electronic devices, solar cells, and flexible screens. In this paper, we introduce a new model of the roll-to-roll system that considers the slipping between the web material and the rollers. Previous mathematical models developed for roll-to-roll systems ignore slippage effects on system dynamics that cause loss of tracking ability for the whole system. Therefore, analyzing the slippage phenomenon in the system promises to increase the accuracy of the roll-to-roll model, thereby making control work more effective. After constructing the mathematical model, a controller that simultaneously regulates the tension and velocity of the system is designed based on the backstepping technique. The designed backstepping-based controller is able to handle the system's complex behavior and ensure stability for the closed-loop system. The theoretical analysis and simulation re-sults show that the proposed model under the proposed velocity-tension control approach guarantees good tracking performance.
