On the Quality Factor of High Frequency Inductors for Resonant and Wireless Power Converters

This paper presents equations to calculate the quality factor of resonant inductors used in high frequency resonant and wireless power converters. The presented equations are used to evaluate the achievable quality factor of a resonant inductor in respect to switching frequency, core size, core material and winding type. The results are used to formulate general design guidelines for high performance high frequency resonant inductors. Limits on the maximum optimum switching frequency of resonant and wireless power converters are presented as well.
