Comprehensive Framework for Designing a Compact Solar PV Controller with Efficient MPPT Control: From Analysis to Validation

Solar energy emerges as a highly promising solution to address the escalating global demand for electricity. However, the reduced efficiency of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and their susceptibility to external factors underscore the necessity of implementing techniques to monitor the solar PV system's Maximum Power Point (MPP). This paper presents a comprehensive study on designing the MPPT controller utilizing various techniques with the SEPIC Converter. The study encompasses steady-state analysis, losses calculation using the CPWM switch model, inductor core and wire losses calculation using ANSYS, and switching losses calculation using PLECS. The designed controllers, Perturb and Observe (P&O) and Incremental Conductance (IC), are simulated using PSIM, while the Model Predictive Controller is simulated using MATLAB. The paper's results on switching, conduction, and core losses analysis, along with the design outcomes of simpler and advanced MPPT techniques-based controllers, provide valuable insights for engineers to design compact converters with appropriate controller configurations tailored to specific application requirements.
