Development of an RFID-based Indoor Localization System to Support Firefighters in Burning Buildings

This paper presents the development of an RFID-based indoor localization system designed to support firefighters in burning buildings. The need for such a system arises from the critical importance of accurately determining and tracking the position of firefighters during emergency operations, a task currently handled with limited effectiveness. The proposed system leverages Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to provide real-time location information to operational leaders, enabling prompt and precise dispatch of rescue teams. The system's hardware setup involves RFID tags integrated into firefighters' suits and RFID readers strategically placed within the building beforehand. The software architecture ensures seamless data processing and visualization, facilitating efficient decision-making.The paper discusses the system requirements, hardware and software configurations, testing results, and the overall effectiveness of RFID in extreme conditions such as high temperatures and dense smoke. The prototype demonstrates that RFID technology, despite certain limitations, offers a viable solution for enhancing the safety and efficiency of firefighting operations. Future research directions include improving heat resistance, ensuring integration with existing systems, and enhancing overall system reliability and performance.
