Enhancing WiFi Authentication: Leveraging OAuth for Secure and User-Friendly Wireless Networks

As wireless networks become increasingly integral to our connected world, improving WiFi authentication is crucial. This paper explores current WiFi authentication methods, categorizing them into residential/small office networks and enterprise networks. Both categories face unique challenges, such as user-related vulnerabilities and administrative burdens. The proposed solution involves integrating OAuth providers (e.g., Google, Facebook, GitHub, Twitter) into WiFi authentication processes. For residential networks, this leverages existing social OAuth authentications, simplifying user access. For enterprises, it offloads server maintenance and aligns with prevalent internal OAuth usage. The paper outlines a proof of concept using an OpenWRT router with a captive portal for Facebook OAuth integration, demonstrating potential improvements in user experience and network security. Future work will focus on enhancing ease of use, supporting multiple OAuth providers, and promoting the concept to ensure broad adoption and continuous improvement.
