New Approach to EV Battery Thermal Management, Using Ionocaloric Cooling Effect

With the use of heavy EV vehicles, the need for improvements in Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) increases. The existing traditional battery cooling systems often fail to maintain the optimum battery temperature. A new cooling method leveraging Ionocaloric effect is proposed for battery cooling systems. The heat absorption is controlled by electrochemical potential via ion addition and removal. The efficiency is improved by a self-designed 3-channel capacitive deionization method. The paper also compares the working fluid between ECI Na’ 1- and glycol water. The difference between the maximum and minimum temperature over the cooling surface is minimum for ECI N a+ 1- compared to glycol water thereby reducing the chance of thermal runaway and maintaining the mean temperature over the cooling surface less than glycol water.
