Design of Control System for Adult Ventilator

This study describes the development of a control system for a low-cost ventilator prototype for adults. A prototype was developed based on the existing infant ventilator. Flow meters and another solenoid valve were integrated into the design to satisfy adult patients' requirements. Other components, such as PLC, HMI, LED light, buzzer, and throttling valves, were used. 3D printed parts were also developed for particular components that are not available off the shelf. Alarms were also incorporated in the system design. The ventilator was tested in different ventilator settings. Results show that the minimum requirement for an Emergency Use Ventilator (EUV) was satisfied. The range of Tidal Volume is 100mL to 650mL and 5cmH2O to 17 cmH2O for PEEP. For Tidal Volume, PEEP and PIP measurements, the values fall within the acceptable tolerances: ± 50mL or ±10% of measured value for Tidal Volume and ±2.5 cmH2O for PEEP and PIP. This study covers only the design and development, functional and stress testing. Clinical test will be conducted in separate study.
