DC Series Arc Fault Detection Capability Using Auxiliary Filter for Module-Level PV Systems

A module-level power electronics for photovoltaic (PV) systems can achieve the maximum power generation for each PV panel, which can overcome the partial shading of PV systems. However, it increases the possibility of series arc fault condition between the PV panel and module-level power electronics. The damaged and loose connector can induce the DC series arc fault condition. This paper investigates DC series arc fault detection capability based on the non-inverting buck-boost converter using the resonant filter for the PV applications. From the arc fault characteristics, the designed impedance model can clarify the DC series arc fault condition. The operational principle and design methodology of proposed buck-boost converter are analyzed with considerations of power conversion and series arc fault detection capability. The experimental results using the 800-W prototype converter can verify the series arc fault detection capability with proposed topology using the resonant filter.
