Advanced Design of Numerical Control Oscillators with Enhanced CORDIC Pipelining

The numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) serves as an indispensable component in digital communication systems, including Digital Radio, Modems, Digital Converters, and computer base stations. Its primary function lies in ensuring the stability of output frequency within the digital phase-locked loop (D-PLL), thereby facilitating reliable communication channels. In addition to its pivotal role within the D- PLL, the NCO holds significant importance in applications such as beamforming, where its performance directly impacts the entire system's functionality. Consequently, achieving high precision in the NCO's operational attributes becomes a central theme and a formidable challenge when optimizing the system performance. In this paper, the focus is on the pipelined CORDIC algorithm and its integration with the basic model of an NCO. An assessment is performed on the improved NCO in terms of its resource utilization and power. Furthermore, the beamforming capabilities of the improved NCO design are also investigated.
