Innovative Fare Collection Systems: Integrating IoT for Enhanced Urban Mobility and Sustainability

This research study examines the effects of IOT-enabled smart fare-collecting systems on urban transportation, emphasizing its operational, economic, and environmental advantages. The research assesses case implementations in Singapore, London, and New York City, using statistical techniques to measure the efficacy of these systems. The investigation indicates that IoT -based fare collecting may decrease operating expenses by an average of 12 % (p < 0.05) and improve service efficiency by 18% (p < 0.01) via optimized operations and decreased fee evasion. Furthermore, passenger satisfaction rates increased by 22% (p < 0.01) as a result of lowered waiting times and the ease of contactless payments. A comparison analysis of pre-and post-implementation data revealed a 30% reduction in cash handling and a 15% decline in ticket evasion occurrences, underscoring the financial and security advantages of smart fare systems. Furthermore, regression analysis revealed a substantial positive correlation (ß = 0.42, p < 0.05) between the use of IoT technology and the decrease in carbon emissions due to enhanced route planning and reduced congestion. Notwithstanding these benefits, hurdles like substantial initial investment expenditures and data privacy issues remain, with 64 % of surveyed cities seeing them as significant impediments. The results highlight the need for strategic planning and public-private collaborations to address these obstacles. This article indicates that IoT -enabled fee-collecting systems enhance operational efficiency and passenger happiness while promoting sustainable urban transportation, necessitating more research and development in this domain.
