Redesign of the Biopsy Needle Notch Cross-Section to Reduce Deflection During Needle Insertion

Needle biopsy is a procedure that is done in a bid to obtain tissues through sampling for the purpose of diagnostic. One of the affiliates which brings issues into this process is the deflection of needle. The displacement of the needle causes misdiagnosis of the biopsy which can cause false negative diagnoses. One of the reasons for this deflection is the structure of the notch of the needle. In this investigation, a novel geometry for the cross section of the notch was optimized and designed. The basic principle was to look for ways to ease the cross-sectional deflection of the notch by increasing the moment of the inertia of the cross-sectional area of the notch. To comprehend the possible and the actual displacements of the current needle and the new form, SOLIDWORKS software was used for both structures. The last phase was the use of nTopology software to apply Finite Element Analysis (FEA). It is already known that soft tissue sampling is performed using biopsy needles, which in turn impose restrictions on the design. However, the ramification so far indicated that the lunar cross-section has the potential to reduce the deflection significantly, suggesting it can be adopted to replace the current profile. This makes us believe that in future, modeling the surrounding tissue in the finite element modeling will be taken into consideration.
