ATMASAWADAHASTA: An Assistive Communication Device for Mobility and Speech-Impaired Patients

This project entailed the design, development, and implementation of a prototype touch sensor integrated into a wearable glove to facilitate communication for a disability. The system had touch sensing technology such as a Raspberry Pi microcontroller, LCD display, and text-to-speech engine that formed an intuitive interface allowing users to convey messages. With very good interworking in hardware and rigorous development of software, proof-of-concept hardware boasts highly accurate touch detection and adaptable messaging options. This way, robust feedback mechanisms have been introduced to ensure efficient communication through this system. After putting it to test usability, users exuded positive comments regarding its usability and ergonomics that would likely heighten quality living. And indeed, through test and validation phases, the proof-of-concept prototype does deliver exceptional real-world usability. Also, the project takes into cognizance the importance of error handling mechanisms and debouncing methodology for reduced false positives and consistent performance. Overall, this project is indeed a very long stride in assistive technology because it highlights the potential offered by wearable devices in enabling people with disabilities and their inclusion in communication. It becomes a solid basis for the project outcome in further research and development to advance assistive technologies and better accessible facilities for different user populations.
