Analysis of the Expansion Plan for Renewable Electrical Energy

In order to meet climate protection targets, the German government has set goals for the expansion of wind energy and photovoltaic systems in the renewable energies law (Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz - EEG) 2023. This paper uses three scenarios to assess how realistic the execution of these aims is. The targets and the analyses mainly relate to the installed capacity in Germany. However, energy quantities generated are also compared. The result is that no scenario is sufficient to meet the German government's targets for installed capacity. Particularly with regard to the average expansion in the recent past, it is clear that the expansion of renewable technologies will lag behind the government's plan by decades. Consequently, the government's target cannot be met without a massive acceleration in the current expansion of wind and photovoltaic installations.
