Applying Life Data Analysis for Assessing the Reliability of Electronic Energy Meters for Malaysia Power Utility

The paper examines the reliability assessment of electronic electricity or energy meters used by Malaysia's power utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). Ensuring the reliability of these meters is vital for both electricity providers and consumers. Issues such as component failures and meter malfunctions can significantly impact the utility's overall business performance, leading to substantial losses from uncharged billing charges and inaccurate meter readings, which in turn affect customer satisfaction. The study evaluates the reliability performance of various TNB energy meter models and makes, using ‘field lifetime’ data. This data is analyzed through a statistical method known as ‘Life Data Analysis' to determine key statistical parameters. The study also identifies reliability performance indicators, including Reliability over Time and Life Expectancy, for the different energy meters.
