Modelling Retired Synchronous Generators as Grid Stabilising Synchronous Condensers

This paper presents the background to peat-fired generation plants in Ireland and how they have contributed to the system stability on the electricity grid. The cessation of such plants in line with international climate action targets presents an alternative purpose and an opportune moment to utilize otherwise redundant machinery into grid stabilizing machines which would allow increased renewable generation targets to be achieved while balancing the requirements of a modern electrical grid.
