Electromechanical Model of the Pulmonary Function as a Teaching Tool in Medicine and Engineering

The error-free function of the pulmonary system is vital for the health of a patient. Accessing tools that ease the teaching-learning process transforms dramatically the world of medicine and opens a path to engineering as a discipline in the field of applied science. This article gives details of the design and construction of an electromechanical model of the pulmonary function, which has been planned and executed for the training of biomedical engineering students and other health care professionals. This model is manufactured taking into account the anatomical properties and mechanical-electrical components needed to simulate the lungs and, by consequence, create a visually pleasing interface. The LabView platform was used to ensure a graphical environment that allowed rapid control and access to the parameters that will be modified in the simulations.
