Electricity Market in El Salvador: Opportunities and Challenges for Smart Grid Integration

The high variability inherent in renewable sources represents a significant challenge for conventional power grids. In response, smart grids are presented as a promising solution to improve the control and efficient management of the electrical grid. This article presents a technical report on the current status of the introduction of the smart grid in El Salvador, highlighting both their advantages and disadvantages, exploring how these technologies can optimize the integration of renewable energies in the context of a country with limited resources and growing energy demand. The associated technical and regulatory challenges are also discussed, as well as opportunities to improve the resilience and sustainability of the Salvadoran energy system.
