Power Quality Improvements in a Zeta Converter for Brushless DC Motor Drives

These paper delves into the precise control of a Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor across all four quadrants comprising forward and reverse motoring as well as braking leveraging a bidirectional DC-DC converter. This converter interfaces between the motor and a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI), facilitating motor operation. In motoring mode, the converter orchestrates buck operation, drawing power from the battery, while regenerative mode sees mechanical energy transformed into electrical energy, subsequently stored in the same rechargeable battery via boost operation. The proposed scheme capitalizes on the frequent start/stop nature of electric vehicles, advocating for energy recovery with every braking event through regenerative braking. Furthermore, when an electric vehicle traverses downhill, controlled speed regulation enables the efficient return of energy to the battery. The utilization of MATLAB/Simulink software validates the seamless execution of these operations, ensuring optimal performance and energy management. This innovative approach offers a robust solution for enhancing energy efficiency and extending the range of electric vehicles, bolstering their viability in sustainable transportation ecosystems.
