Comparison of Performance on MRT, MCT, PSVT and HSVT Spatial Ability Tests between Paper and Desktop Display

This study investigates the spatial ability skills of engineering students using four different tests: the Mental Rotation Test, Mental Cutting Test, Purdue Spatial Visualization Test, and Heinrich Spatial Visualization Test. U sing the statistical program package R, comparisons were made between paper-based and desktop display test results for 201 and 205 students, respectively. The results showed a 10.41% higher average correct answer rate on paper. Significant differences were found between the two formats, mainly in the Purdue Spatial Visualization Test and both subtests of the Heinrich Spatial Visualization Test. In their case, paper-based performance was significantly better. The results show that, when evaluating spatial skills, traditional paper-based assessments may better engage cognitive processes than desktop displays. These results are important for educators and researchers since they point to the need for careful consideration when designing digital assessments for spatial ability.
