Efficient OneM2M Standard Implementation for Lightweight IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a vast ecosystem encompassing tags, sensors, embedded devices, and more, enabling innovative services across domains such as transportation, health-care, and automation. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is a vital subset of IoT, emphasizing seamless connectivity, autonomous data gathering, and minimal human intervention. Standardized communication technologies like WiFi, Zigbee, and Ethernet facilitate interoperability, reducing development costs. This paper explores the evolution of M2M technologies and the emergence of standards like ETSI M2M and OneM2M. The OneM2M initiative aims to establish global uniformity in M2M communication, offering a platform with standardized resources and REST APIs. It encompasses essential services such as registration, subscription, discovery, and data management. The paper introduces a novel implementation of the OneM2M standard, utilizing a low-level programming language. This approach is designed for resource-constrained systems, addressing challenges like protocol interoperability, scalability, and latency in MTC gateways. The implementation is lightweight, reducing memory overhead and enhancing hardware resource control. The paper provides a comprehensive review of related work in M2M implementations. It delves into the architecture of the TinyOneM2M software, adapting to scenarios like Home Gateway, Single Device (Peer-to-Peer), and Cloud. It details implementing the OneM2M standard version 5.1 and presents testing mechanisms for various scenarios. Insights gained from the system’s development are discussed, and future research directions are outlined. This research contributes to the efficient realization of IoT’s full potential by offering a lightweight, robust, and scalable solution for M2M communication, aligning with the evolving IoT landscape.
