Remote Activation System Design for Rural Street Luminaires Energized via Power Distribution Lines

Outdoor lighting in rural areas is less developed than in urban areas. This may be due to rural areas being less prioritized for infrastructure investments, limited financial resources and difficult accessibility due to their remote location. In rural areas, inadequate lighting conditions, especially in the evening hours, increase security risks, cause accidents, and adversely affect the quality of life by causing restrictions in areas such as education and training activities, working hours and social life. To overcome all these issues, this study aims to provide a remote activation system to rapidly and confidently remove transient faults in rural power distribution lines due to physical causes such as tree branch contact, wind impact, fires and pollution. Furthermore, this study fills a significant gap in the literature. Based on the principle of measuring line impedance, this system, which can detect transient faults in the line of sodium vapor street luminaires and offers remote intervention with the designed interface, is equipped with GSM communication and Modbus RS485 motorized vending fuse.
