Development of a Smart IoT-based Dustbin Level Monitoring System

In recent times, the exponential rise in waste output has become a major worldwide problem, resulting in dirty environments, unpleasant aromas, and the spread of diseases in cities and public spaces. Traditional waste management strategies have been ineffectual in dealing with this issue. This paper therefore presents the design and construction of a smart waste bin that aims to streamline waste management procedures, reduce manual labor, and mitigate the associated costs. The proposed system utilizes various components such as PIR sensor, ultrasonic sensor, servo motor, buzzer, SIM800l GSM module, LCD display, and Arduino UNO microcontroller. The proposed system also uses a level indicator that communicates with an authorized personnel indicating the amount of waste in the bin at certain thresholds. If the proposed smart dustbins are widely adopted, replacing our current traditional dustbins, garbage can be effectively handled. The designed system was tested and found to function in accordance with the study's objectives.
