Guidance and Control of a Spinning 155mm Artillery Shell Using Vector Form of Proportional Navigation Guidance

Guidance and control of artillery shells using Precision Guidance Kit is a challenging research area due to high spin rates of shells during flight and higher g-loading launch process. However, technological advancements like low cost navigation sensors, fast actuators and high speed microprocessors have paved the way to develop Precision Guidance Kit to steer spinning artillery shells towards intended target. Conventional guidance fuze is roll decoupled from spinning shell to avoid complexity in guidance and control at high spin rates. Spinning guidance fuze requires fast actuation system and multiple GPS antennas to ensure navigation satellites availability. In this research, roll coupled guidance fuze is considered for guidance and control scheme development. A detailed 6-DoF mathematical model of a spinning projectile has been developed. Four canards are considered as control surfaces to steer the projectile. In this paper a guidance and control scheme is presented which can effectively steer the projectile to intended target with a good hit accuracy. Vector form of Proportional Navigation Guidance has been employed to generate the correction demand of spinning projectile. Proposed guidance and control scheme is very effective and produces sub-meter hit accuracy in nominal simulations. Monti-Carlo Simulation has been developed to determine Circular Error Probable (CEP) of guided shell with proposed guidance law in presence of navigation sensor's random errors, random variations or uncertainties in spinning projectile's design parameters, aerodynamic coefficients, and random wind. The proposed guidance and control scheme has effectively performed in Monti-Carlo Simulations.
