Robust Battery Management System for UAV Applications

UAVs have become indispensable tools in agriculture, disaster management, surveillance and filmmaking. This study presents an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) designed explicitly for drone/UAV applications, with a primary objective of achieving Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL4) certification. The BMS incorporates critical safety modes such as Undervoltage Lockout (UVLO) and Ship mode, ensuring operational excellence and safety across various scenarios. Among its features are customisable charging/discharging voltage ranges and programmable timings, offering unparalleled adaptability to meet the dynamic demands of diverse missions. Furthermore, integrating a watchdog mechanism significantly enhances system reliability and resilience, guaranteeing sustained performance even in adverse conditions. Leveraging an accessible I2C interface, the BMS enables real-time monitoring of cell voltages, state of charge (SoC), and temperature, furnishing operators with indispensable insights into battery health and operational performance. This design is extensively tested to international standards to achieve a highly reliable product.
