An Intelligent Embedded Alcohol Detection System for Drivers

The threat of driving under the influence of "unreasonable" drinking is responsible for more than 60% of the increasing number of accidents in the world. This paper presents an embedded system for detecting alcohol. In this paper a self-testing breathalyzer will be designed so that drivers can better avoid the danger of drunk driving. The proposed model was created using a PC connected with the Arduino Mega board, alcohol detection sensors, and other sensors. Alcohol detection sensor (MQ-3) is connected to the Arduino Mega when the driver breathes through to detect the blood alcohol level. Each time the driver exhales, a sensor measures the alcohol level and analyses whether it is within a "safe" range. When excessive alcohol levels are detected, the results are displayed on an OLED screen, and it triggers an alarm (a buzzer and an LED light). The paper also presents a proposal for a global alcohol detection system with Ignition Interlock Devices (IID) capability. We are proposing using a phone as a biometric verification method to detect the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of the driver, measured using an infrared spectroscopy sensor, and communicate back to a central station system through a vehicle controller.
