Overview of Low Power Techniques Used in RF Front-End: Brief Survey

In modern RF communication systems, reducing power consumption is essential for extending battery life and improving overall system efficiency, particularly in portable and battery-operated devices. This survey paper comprehensively reviews various low-power techniques applicable to key building blocks of the RF front-end, including power amplifiers (PAs), low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), mixers, oscillators, filters, and matching networks. For power amplifiers, switch-mode operation (Class D, E, F) and envelope tracking are explored to enhance efficiency, while Doherty amplifiers are examined for their ability to maintain performance across a wide range of output powers. In the context of LNAs, techniques such as inductive degeneration, current reuse, and self-biasing are analyzed for their potential to minimize power consumption while preserving signal integrity. Mixers, a critical component for frequency conversion, are assessed with a focus on passive designs and Gilbert cell mixers with current reuse to achieve lower power usage. Oscillators, which provide the local oscillator signal, are reviewed with low-power design approaches like negative resistance and MEMS-based oscillators, along with adaptive biasing to optimize power savings. Additionally, filters and matching networks are evaluated with innovative solutions like switched-capacitor filters and adaptive matching networks for efficient power transfer. The paper also discusses overarching system-level techniques such as dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and power gating, which are pivotal in reducing both static and dynamic power dissipation across the entire RF front-end. By integrating these diverse strategies, significant reductions in power consumption can be achieved, thereby enhancing the efficiency and longevity of RF communication systems.
