Communication Technologies for AMI: A Testing Analysis Perspective

Across India, power utilities are transitioning from conventional energy meters to smart energy meters due to the numerous advantages of smart meters, including bidirectional communication, real-time energy consumption data, and accurate billing. The Government of India is actively promoting the deployment of prepaid smart meters and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) through various government-funded initiatives. This transition is largely driven by Government of India and utilities' interest in leveraging new technologies to enhance revenue realization and for improved accuracy and efficiency with improved data.AMI systems are integral to the modernization of electrical grids, facilitating improved energy management and real-time communication between utilities and consumers. These systems rely on a variety of communication technologies, primarily Cellular, Radio Frequency (RF), and Power Line Communication (PLC). The effectiveness and efficiency of AMI systems are closely relied on the adoption of appropriate communication technologies as per field requirements.This paper evaluates the performance of various communication technologies used in AMI systems, drawing data from laboratory-based testing. We analyze key technologies, including RF and Cellular, focusing on their performance under different Service Level Agreement (SLA) test cases. The findings provide valuable insights for the possible selection of suitable communication technologies for implementation of AMI systems.
