Software Defined Radio Implementation for Analyzing Power and Bandwidth Measurements from NOAA Satellites

Monitoring the weather in an area is crucial for human life. With weather monitoring, it will be beneficial for humans, such as being able to avoid natural disasters due to bad weather or planning daily activities. NOAA 18 and 19 weather satellites have contributed to the monitoring of the Earth’s weather through the results of continuous scanning of the Earth’s surface. To process the weather data sent by NOAA satellites, a ground station is needed that can capture the satellite signal and process it. Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology is a technology that can be used as the main device of the weather satellite data receiving system. This study also aims to find out how the implementation of RTL SDR as a weather data receiving tool. With RTL SDR, a NOAA weather satellite data receiver system can be created at a frequency of 137 MHz, accompanied by decoding software to convert audio signals into images of the earth’s surface. In this study, RTL-SDR will be fused with a V-Dipole antenna as well as software such as WXtoIMG and Sharp SDR. This paper analyzes the required bandwidth, signal power during transmission, as well as weather images received as research parameters. From this study, it was found that the width of the bandwidth and the amount of power obtained during the signal transmission process affect the quality of the images obtained.
