Application of Artificial Intelligence in Printing Industry: Systematic Review

The commercial printing industry is undergoing significant changes with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), which has the potential to improve production efficiency, quality control, and overall competitiveness. Despite increasing interest in AI, there is still a gap in the literature regarding the specific technologies being adopted and the challenges they present. This study systematically reviews AI applications in the commercial printing sector, identifying key technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and robotics. These technologies are primarily used in areas like production planning and control, quality management, maintenance, supply chain optimization, and creative design. The review highlights opportunities, including automated defect detection, 3D printing innovations, optimized production processes, predictive decision-making models, and cost savings through inventory management. However, challenges remain, including the complexity of integrating AI with existing workflows, the need for high-quality data, realtime processing limitations, and the high costs of AI adoption. The study emphasizes the importance of industry-specific AI strategies and calls for further research to address the unique needs of the printing sector, focusing on improving data quality, fostering human-AI collaboration, and developing scalable solutions for wider adoption.
