Qualitative Evaluation of Semi-Quantitative Design Guidelines Concerning Transient Stability

While the design guidelines on transient stability of grid-following converters have been widely studied, many results are incomplete qualitative conclusions indicating a monotone relationship between performance and parameters. Such simplified design guidelines bury the varying influences of parameters, which become considerably significant for converter-based systems. To reflect this effect, we utilize sensitivity analysis to derive semi-quantitative design guidelines from typical transient stability analysis methods. The comparison of the design guidelines allows for a qualitative evaluation of those methods in a design-oriented view. Moreover, we apply bifurcation analysis to explain the qualitative differences between the analysis methods. Our results reveal different levels of consistency between time-domain simulation, energy-based methods, and bifurcation analysis, implying the benefit of flexible utilization of these methods.
