Development of Detection Devices and Inspection Strategies for Partial Discharge in 10kV Cables

In the 10 kV distribution network lines, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated power cables are extensively utilized. However, due to their frequent exposure to harsh operating conditions, these cables are highly susceptible to partial discharge phenomena, which adversely affect the reliability of power supply. This study analyzes common detection methods for partial discharge and proposes an integrated approach using ultrasonic, transient earth voltage (TEV), and ultra-high frequency (UHF) methods to significantly enhance the accuracy of detecting partial discharges in cables. Considering the operational characteristics and environment of distribution network cables, a detection device for partial discharge in distribution networks has been designed, along with an inspection strategy tailored for these cables. Utilizing the designed device and inspection strategy, a case of partial discharge in a 10 kV cable was detected and analyzed. The source of the partial discharge was quickly identified, and the cause was determined, thereby validating the effectiveness of the equipment and methods used.
