An Overview of UPFC Applications in Stability Analysis of Power System

Maintenance and reliability are the main concerns in modern power systems. With the advancements in transmission system infrastructure development and the rise in transmission voltage, it is necessary to enhance the system's power transfer capability and controllability. This can be achieved with the aid of power electronics-based devices called FACTS. This work presents an overview of opportunities for stability analysis of power systems using UPFC. The UPFC is a versatile FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) device that can regulate both actual and reactive power flow in transmission lines, providing greater flexibility in power system management. This review study illustrates that the integration of UPFC significantly improves system performance under normal and abnormal conditions. Also, the implementation challenges are discussed.
