Innovative V2G System for Energy Management: Insights from MATLAB Simulink Simulations

The work presents a case study of the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system which targets using electric vehicles (EVs) as a backup for energy management. It allows the transfer of surplus energy from EVs to the grid/ or for domestic use. This study considers a dual active bridge converter (DAB) for power control, an LCL filter for harmonic suppression, a phase lock loop (PLL) for synchronization to the grid, and an energy management system (EMS) for decision-making regarding energy sharing. In this study, a 53kW Tesla Roadstar battery is considered which is being charged by PV panels and used as a backup in peak hours when the EV is not in use. V2G is a complex system that consists of several sub-system designs. A complete design and selection criteria for these sub-systems are demonstrated through rigorous simulations using MATLAB Simulink. The results demonstrate the system’s capability to manage energy flows and maintain grid stability. Moreover, the charging of EVs through PV further contributes to green energy and relieves the stress on the conventional grid in peak hours.
