Sensors and Cognitive Support for Pilot Health and Performance Assessment

Continuous improvement in the quality of life of pilots is an essential activity in the defense field, resulting in better individual health, improved concentration, and ultimately better performance in operational missions. In this direction "biotechnology and human enhancement" is one of the key capabilities that the defence researchers are developing nowadays. Even if the trend in recent years is to push towards unmanned systems, i.e. controlled by military personnel at remote ground station or by artificial intelligence systems, the human in the loop is still and will still be for the next decades the crucial component of all defence systems. People in the driving position in the cockpit of an aircraft or at the command-and-control position of a multi domain defence system, could be subjected to new stimuli, to new stresses, to new types of strain that were unimaginable even just a few years ago. In this work it is presented the defence use case prospective for the usage in an interconnected combat cloud operation of biosensors, vision systems for pilot cognitive enhancement and soldier psychological and medical information sharing. The purpose of these measurement, vision, and medical information sharing systems is to monitor the health and performance of military personnel on the ground and in flight.
